Changing Your Passphrase

To change your passphrase, click on Preferences in the main menu, select the Passphrase tab, and click on the Change Passphrase button. Once you enter your old and new passphrases on the "Changing Passphrase" form, press the "Change Passphrase" button. Your local files will be re-encrypted and the server will register the authentication code for the new passphrase. If your X-IM account is only installed on one computer, this is all that you will need to do.

If your X-IM account is installed on other computers, then after following the above procedure on one computer, you must uninstall X-IM from the other computer(s), and then reinstall. Once you re-install and enter your new passphrase, it will be synchronized with the installation on which you changed your passphrase. Until you take these steps these installations will be expecting the old passphrase, but will not be able to log you on to the server, as the server is expecting the new passphrase, which causes the response described below:

If you receive the message "The server could not verify your passphrase." it means that the local installation accepted your passphrase (probably your old passphrase) but the server did not recognize it. This would most typically happen if you failed to uninstall this installation before reinstalling it. If you received this message and you did uninstall, there may have been a problem during the uninstall process. In this case, it is recommended that you delete all the files in the X-IM folder ("C:\Program Files\X-IM\" by default) and then install. You do not have to delete any of the subfolders of the X-IM folder, and to keep your memos you must not delete the "Memos" subfolder.
