Memo Inbox/Outbox

This window shows you all the secure memo files that are stored on your system. The three tabs on the list represents the three areas where memos are stored: Memos received from others are in the "Received" group, memos that have been sent to their recipients are in the "Sent" group, and memos saved locally to be sent later are in the "Saved" group.

Memos that have not yet been read show up bold in the listing, or you can also mark a memo to show up as bold by right-clicking it and selecting "Mark Unread". It will go back to normal when you next open it to view it. To view a memo, double-click it. If you want to permanently delete a memo, right-click it and select "Delete Memo".

In each group, you can sort the list by any of the column types (i.e. To, From, Subject, Date/Time, Files, and ID) by simply clicking on that column header.

The three groups, "Received", "Sent", and "Saved" also correspond to three folders which contain the memo files, respectively (assuming you installed X-IM to c:\Program Files\X-IM\, the default):

c:\Program Files\X-IM\Memos\Received\
c:\Program Files\X-IM\Memos\Saved\
c:\Program Files\X-IM\Memos\Sent\

If files are added or removed from these directories, X-IM will automatically try to read them and add them to the list. This allows for a broader use of X-IM Memo files, in that you can transport them by any means desired, or store them on any media desired.

For example you could create a memo, store it locally (to the "saved" group), then copy the memo file from c:\program files\x-im\memos\saved\ to a diskette, and send it registered mail to its recipient. Because of the security of the memo files, there's no need to worry about the security of the medium being used to send the file. For more information about security issues of memos see "Security Information" under "Memos".

The file name of the memo file is the ID of the memo followed by .XIMM.

Note that the memo information displayed in the Memo Inbox/Outbox window is only accessible to those who are a sender or recipient of the memo. So if you receive a memo file and copy it to your "received" folder, X-IM will attempt to read it, but if you're not actually one of the recipients of the file, it will not be able to display any information about it (other than its ID, which is known from the file name).

You can use the Create New Memo button to create a new memo. This will open the Contacts window and allow you to double-click on any contact to create a memo to them. You can also create a memo by opening the Contacts window from the Main Menu, select one or more contacts and click the "Memo/File" button. Creating and sending memos is only a feature of the Pro Version. Standard Version users can only receive and read memos.
